Dental implants

Some of us are missing teeth due to injuries or diseases, which can lead to difficulties in speaking and chewing properly. This situation can often be frustrating and embarrassing. To replace a missing tooth, a dental implants is surgically inserted. The implant acts as an artificial titanium root to which a porcelain crown is then attached.

Implant surgery is a process that requires care and expertise to achieve optimal functional and aesthetic results. As a first step in the treatment, the patient undergoes a thorough examination and diagnostics. This includes X-rays and also so-called CBCT, i.e. 3D imaging to assess the structure of the jawbone and detect any obstacles to the installation of an implant. Before the operation, the patient is given a local anaesthetic to avoid feeling any pain.

To minimize the risk of infection, everything is done in a sterile environment and the patient lies under a sterile drape where only the mouth is visible. In the area where the implant is to be placed, the dentist opens up the gums with a scalpel to expose the jawbone. A titanium screw implant is drilled into the jawbone with a special drill and the gums are then stitched together to allow the implant to heal. During the first few weeks of healing, the patient should rinse with chlorhexidine and use an extra soft toothbrush to keep the surgical area as clean as possible.

During the healing period, you may experience swelling of the cheek and lip around the surgical area, which after a few days may turn slightly blue and yellowish Once the gum tissue and screw have been allowed to heal for about 3 months, it is time for the final and permanent adjustment. A custom-made porcelain implant crown is cemented or screwed onto the implant, restoring the patient's chewing, speech and aesthetic function.

When you have undergone implant treatment, it is very important to go to the dentist for regular follow-up visits to monitor the condition of the implant. Flossing and brushing around an implant tooth is just as important as keeping a real tooth clean.
